A 90-mph fastball (or a high-velocity riseball) takes roughly 400 milliseconds to travel from the pitcher's hand to the catcher's mitt. Here is the problem: your brain needs nearly 150 of those milliseconds just to process the light signals and recognize what the pitch even is. Another 150 milliseconds are eaten up just physically executing your swing.

That leaves you with a microscopic window of just 100 milliseconds to make a decision.

  • Contrast Sensitivity (Especially Under Stadium Lights): Playing night games under the harsh glare of Houston-area complexes can wreck your natural depth perception. If your contrast sensitivity is weak, the ball blends right into the dark backdrop, making it impossible to read the rotational spin—the "red dot"—of a slider or curveball.

  • Saccadic Eye-Tracking & Anticipation: Your eyes have to make rapid micro-jumps (called saccades) to track a ball from the release point to the hitting zone. If your visual tracking software is glitching, your eyes will temporarily "lose" the ball mid-flight, forcing your brain to guess where the point of contact will be.
